Gospel Legend John P. Kee is back with ‘Throwback: An Evening with John P. Kee, Part 1’, releasing on Black Friday

The prince of gospel music, John P. Kee, is back in a big way. After two years of health challenges – including cancer and a flesh-eating virus – the legendary singer-producer is on the mend, on the road with a staggering concert schedule and in the studio making new music. All these elements inspired the forthcoming album, Throwback: An Evening with John P. Kee, Part 1 (Kee Music Group / Tyscot Records), which releases in digital album and compact disc configurations just in time for holiday gift-giving on Black Friday – November 28, 2025. The first radio single from the project “Church Medley” is making joyful noises at gospel radio. The song combines five of Kee’s biggest early hits, such as “I Believe,” “I Won’t Let Go,” “It Will Be Alright,” “He’ll Welcome Me,” and “Thank You Lord (He Did It All).” While Kee leads the song, Zacardi Cortez and Tallie Rogers both sing verses at certain points. The exhilarating track has entered the Top 30 on both the Billboard and Mediabase Gospel Airplay charts.

“For years I ignored the fact that my old catalog touched millions of lives,” says Kee, who has pastored the New Life Fellowship Church in Charlotte, NC, for two decades. “As I continued to write what I considered meaningful new worship music, the fans continued to scream to hear the oldies! So, I finally gave in, realizing that these old songs captivated and inspired generations. For over four decades they became the fabric of many people’s lives. So, I decided to surrender, go in the studio and record these classics for a new generation. I’m honored, excited, and blessed to give this gift to the world, Throwback 2025.”

Fans are happy to see Kee back on the road. He was diagnosed with prostate cancer in January 2024 and a few weeks later was hospitalized with necrotizing fasciitis, a potentially lethal flesh-eating infection. The latter required five surgeries and a lengthy convalescence, during which Kee had to learn to walk again. He’s bounced back from both illnesses and has put all his new energy into making new music. He’s currently working on a few new music projects for himself such as Throwback, and a series of tribute albums to his musical mentor, Bishop Rance Allen.

Throughout the Throwback proceedings, Kee features his church-famous proteges such as the aforementioned artists as well as LeJeune Thompson, Calvin Rodgers Crystal Smith and Ladonna Hairston Mole on various selections. The album concludes with two versions of the new studio cut, “Play Yo Tambourine.” The song is a catchy nod to the 803Fresh “Boots on the Ground” line-dance craze, inviting church folks to leap from the pews and play yo tambourine. Kee also equates the playing of the tambourine to the ringing of the bell after his cancer treatments were completed.

Kee commands the sessions with the combined charisma of a circus ringmaster and a singing psychologist who knows just the words to lift the spirits of his patients. It’s a joyous reminder of Kee’s heyday hits but with just enough sanctified zeal to attract new fans.

John P. Kee has been singing professionally since his teens, when he first played in the R&B band Cameo. As a teenager, he sold drugs and became a born-again Christian after a friend was murdered in a botched drug deal. The self-taught pianist later switched to gospel music, where he helped shape the sound of 1990s urban choir music with hits such as “Jesus is Real,” “Show Up,” “Standing in the Need,” and the RIAA-certified gold album, Not Guilty. Over the course of his career, he’s amassed over 300 million digital streams. In 2025, BMI honored Kee as a Trailblazer of Gospel Music at their annual Trailblazers of Gospel Awards ceremony.

David A. Porter, Sr. Releases New Holiday Anthem and Carol, ‘Finally Christmas’

Songwriter, singer, and pastor of Excel Church in Bowie, MD, Pastor David A. Porter, Sr., is ushering in the season with a new holiday anthem and Christmas carol. Porter began writing songs over 30 years ago, but didn’t start recording and releasing music until 2021. “Finally Christmas” marks his debut original Christmas release, which is followed by a companion track, “The Announcement.”

“Finally, Christmas is a song I wrote more than 15 years ago to welcome the joy and wonder of the holiday season while celebrating the birth of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ,” Porter explains. “After all these years, I’m thrilled to share this long-awaited Christmas anthem with the world finally.”

“Finally Christmas” is an infectious anthem and holiday music standard in the making. The background vocalists beautifully lift the melody, while the musicians infuse the track with an undeniable sense of jubilee and festive power. Jason Nelson Drops New Christmas Track

Gospel’s coolest crooner, Jason Nelson, has dropped a hot new holiday track entitled “Shepherd’s Song” (Jaelyn Song /Tyscot / FairTrade). The bouncy, feel-good track is a warm and light-hearted retelling of the birth of Jesus Christ. Nelson’s smooth vocal tone coats the song like glaze on Christmas cookies. He co-wrote the track with his longtime collaborators Danni & Jerome Baylor, with whom he wrote his 2021 No. 1 radio smash “Residue.” This time, they added noted Maryland horn arranger Larry Mack to the writing team. This track is a preview of Nelson’s first Christmas album, which he’s planning for a fall 2026 release.

Helping to define an entire era of modern worship in the ’90s, “I Could Sing Of Your Love Forever” continues to bridge generations today. The reimagined worship anthem continues to champion the message of God’s endless love for people while introducing a new sound accessible to listeners worldwide.

The story of the song began in the small village of Littlehampton on the south coast of England, where Smith led worship for a monthly youth event called Cutting Edge. Not knowing anything about the burgeoning Christian music industry in America, his focus was on the 1,000 kids who showed up every month. “That was our world,” he remembers. “And every month it was like, ‘Okay, God, what are you going to say? What do you want us to sing next month? I need another song to put on the lips of these kids that are coming.’ And they weren’t just church kids; it was open for everybody.”

It was out of this movement that drew as many as 10,000 young people for special events that “I Could Sing Of Your Love Forever” was birthed. “I remember getting this plastic swimming pool and kids were coming down front, getting baptized in the moment,” shares Smith. “We’re worshipping and like, right, you’ve just got saved, in you go. … amazing memories.”

“I started playing guitar in high school, and there were all these songs that were just very piano-driven,” says Baldwin. “And I remember, specifically, ‘I Could Sing Of Your Love Forever’ opened the door for me. It was the first time I’d heard spontaneous worship recorded … and I was like, ‘we can do that?’ It just gave me permission to worship that way.”

“I think now we’re in an interesting moment in history in the church where that permission needs to be given again,” responds Smith. “I don’t think God’s ever said once, ‘This is the sound that I like.’ And yet, we’ve tricked ourselves into thinking we’ve found what He really likes. But I don’t think you find that in scripture. It’s like, ‘Make a holy noise.’ So I think there’ll be some new things that come along. And I think we’ll be glad for that.”

The ‘holy noise’ of “I Want To Sing Of Your Love Forever” follows the House of Worship lead single and video, “Shout To The Lord – Live,” a duet of this global worship anthem by original writer and Dove Award-winning, RIAA Gold®-selling Australian worship pioneer Darlene Zschech and 17-time GRAMMY® Award-winning gospel icon CeCe Winans. The Brighter Day Community Choir Set to Present ‘The Way We Were’, Throwback Gospel Concert in November

The Brighter Day Community Choir of Charlotte brings back its much-loved “Throwback” concert for a second year. The event will take audiences on a musical journey through gospel favorites from the 1980s, 1990s, and early 2000s, the era of choir music that shaped a generation of praise. The concert takes place on Sunday, November 2, 2025, from 4-6 p.m. at The Field.

Remembering Bonita V. White: More Than a Melody

On September 25, 2025, Bonita V. White left this earthly sphere. It came out of the blue. It was quite a surprise to many of us and shook so many at the core. “Surely not, Bonita,” many thought. You see, Bonita was one of those people who we believed would always be around. Her departure reminds us that life is but a vapor.

The last time I saw Bonita, she was doing what she always does, celebrating someone else. That afternoon, she was celebrating her longtime friend, gospel industry insider, Pastor Jerome Bell, as he was being installed as pastor at Grace Memorial Baptist Church in Washington, D.C. I remember our conversation from that day. She was sharing some history with me about Robert Fryson, the prolific songwriter who penned “I Just Want to Praise You.”

As always, I was struck by her encyclopedic gospel music knowledge. I said, “We’ve got to do an interview. We’ve got to talk about all these things you know about gospel music history,” and she responded with a humble nod. You see, Bonita never sought the spotlight for herself. Instead, she found great joy in uplifting and celebrating those around her and sharing great nuggets of history. Shortly after that conversation, this journalist moved to Charlotte, N.C, and our interview never took place. It’s interesting how we always seem to think there’s always next time, more opportunities to do this or that. Sadly, it was not meant to be.

Bonita was a founding member, business manager, and singer for the famed ensemble Patrick Lundy & the Ministers of Music. On many occasions, as part of that ensemble, she sang background for many celebrities during many high-profile events, including the Annual Legislative Conference of the Congressional Black Caucus, Gospel Music Heritage Month on Capitol Hill, and A Capitol Fourth. Surely her voice resonated among the shadows of the monuments and all those other historic things that are in Washington, DC.

Over her lifetime, Bonita received several accolades. In 2024, she received the DMV Musicians and Singers Fellowship Distinguished Service Award, honoring her decades of impact in ministry, music, and mentorship. In 2014, she was an honoree at the Coalition for African Americans in the Performing Arts (CAAPA) annual pre-caucus reception, “Melody of Art.” CAAPA recognized her for dedication and outstanding work on behalf of African American classical musicians and the performing arts community. There were others, but these provide an inkling into her overall contributions to the gospel community.

But that’s not all. Bonita attended as many events as she could to cheer on gospel artists and musicians in the DMV. She always posted about it on Facebook, carefully curating every nuance and sharing who else was in attendance. Bonita always gave her trusted critic’s review of the event. It was always glowing and always uplifting. One could consider Bonita a pseudo-journalist because her take on events was always breaking news and hot off the press.

One memorable moment included her participation in the 75th birthday celebration for Gospel legend Richard Smallwood in 2023, where she led “Oh Lord, Stand By Me.” Bonita was so ecstatic about the night’s events, she posted on Facebook several times. She kept everyone posted on how many views the video had on YouTube (it’s currently 709, by the way). Bonita was wrapped up in celebrating her friend.

There are NO words to express just how much the DMV LOVES Richard Smallwood, how much sharing his gifts, talents and humility means to SO many, how Godly proud we are of him and his accomplishments and how unifying his Tribute was for the DMV Gospel Community! It was truly a night to remember – forever!!! (Bonita White, 2023)

When Pastor Jerome Bell was inducted into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame, she was overjoyed and penned this message:
Congratulations on your induction into The Gospel Music Hall of Fame, your second pastoral anniversary at Grace, and your birthday celebration. So very proud of you, My Gospel Brother of 48 years + counting!! (Bonita White, 2025)

That was Bonita, always celebrating others. As we remember Bonita, we can all create our memorial stones of her life in the way that she interacted with us, that voice, that smile. Bonita sowed seeds, and those seeds will continue to grow through the encouragement that Bonita provided to young up-and-coming musicians, singers, and mentees. It will live on when that person plays or sings or recalls a historical gospel tidbit they got from Bonita. Indeed, Bonita’s legacy lives on, although she’s departed for a heavenly residence. This was very evident in the tributes that poured in on social media when the news broke.

This is just a small glimpse into how the DMV gospel community reacted. However, the community does not mourn as one who has no hope because they know that Bonita loved the Lord. They know that Bonita loved the gospel community. They know that Bonita loved her friends and her church. In the federal space, she was respected as a mentor among her colleagues. She hadn’t been considering retiring, but her heavenly pension kicked in.

Gospel Time Machine: Mike McCoy and Voices United Rekindle Gospel’s Golden Legacy with Retro Concert

Some concerts do more than entertain. Instead, they take you back down memory lane. That’s how it was on Saturday, October 18, as Mike McCoy and Voices United took the stage for their Retro Concert II at Greater St. John Cathedral in Upper Marlboro, MD. Emceed by Stephen Hurd, the concert was a musical celebration that featured gospel hits from the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s. The result was an unforgettable night of nostalgia, joy, and praise.

The setlist was a journey through the catalogs of Milton Brunson, Robert Fryson, L.A. Mass Choir, Walter Hawkins, and many more. A highlight of the evening was Helen Holmes singing “God Is.” No choir backing, just Helen singing the song in the powerful way that only she could. Mike McCoy stated that she is often called “Hurricane.” That was very evident with her performance as she blew in and tore strongholds down with her delivery.

A poignant part of the evening was when Bishop Marvin McCoy came up and sang the song he penned, “For the Rest of My Life.” Originally denied the credit he deserved for his authorship, the song has experienced a resurgence through Vincent Bohanan, and the proper credit was ascribed.

Mike McCoy and Voices United performed with excellence, high energy, and visible joy. The chemistry between the singers and the band was seamless, with each song leading the audience deeper into a spiritual rich music experience.

The sanctuary was full of singers and musicians. Spotted in the audience were Roderick Giles, Jared Sawyers, and Brian Spriggs.

The Retro concert took a trip back in time, serving as a reminder of gospel’s origins and its enduring significance. This was so much more than a performance. It was a musical accomplishment that was well executed and will be long remembered.
