On Friday, July 17, the gospel community came together to celebrate Jonathan Shanks Sr. and his impact on the DMV quartet gospel community. Those who came to celebrate him packed Harvest Assembly Baptist Church in Alexandria, Va., for a memorial musical honoring the beloved quartet advocate. Additional chairs were brought into the sanctuary while other attendees filled an overflow room after every available seat had been taken.
Shanks, who passed away on June 29, 2026, was widely known alongside his wife, Robin Walker Shanks, as co-host of For Da Love of Quartet on WYCB Spirit 1340 AM. Through the program, the couple faithfully promoted quartet gospel music, providing a platform for both established and emerging artists while building lasting relationships throughout the gospel community.
The evening featured powerful musical tributes from The Highway QC’s, The Heavenly Sons, Zion, New Vision, The Barbour Travelers, Martha & The Sisters in Christ, The Redeeming Souls, Mike & The Fellas, Jamie Curry and Anointed Sisters, and several others, each honoring a man remembered as a tireless supporter of gospel music ministry.
In addition to the live performances, attendees viewed a series of heartfelt video tributes from gospel leaders and friends, including Pastor Maurice Yancey, Alan Pringle of The Gospel Legends, Tammy Edwards, Good Gospel Entertainment, and many others who shared memories of Shanks’ kindness, encouragement, and unwavering commitment to quartet gospel music.
Throughout the evening, one theme surfaced repeatedly: Jonathan Shanks’ deep love for his wife, Robin. Family members, friends, and fellow musicians spoke not only of his passion for gospel music but also of the way he honored and cherished his marriage. One speaker drew laughter from the audience when they remarked that after observing the way Jonathan treated Robin over the years, “my husband has work to do!” The lighthearted comment underscored the respect many had for the couple’s relationship and the example they set for others.
Shanks’s musical gifts were also remembered. One fellow musician described him as one of the best pocket drummers in the DMV. A pocket drummer is one who maintains a steady, dependable groove. It was a fitting description for a man whose influence provided stability and encouragement to so many artists throughout the region.
Stellar Award winner Phillip Carter reflected on Shanks’ influence, saying, “Jonathan Shanks’ greatest legacy will be his impact on the DMV quartet community and the gospel community in general. He and his wife, Robin, supported everyone they could and made everyone feel special. This area has lost a person who created opportunities for others, and that is hard to replace.”
That sentiment resonated throughout the memorial as artists and attendees reflected on the countless opportunities Jonathan and Robin Shanks created through their radio ministry and personal encouragement. Their commitment to supporting gospel artists extended well beyond the microphone, helping ministries grow and strengthening the bonds within the quartet community.
Quartet gospel music has long been a cornerstone of the Shanks couple. Robin Walker Shanks is a member of the Sensational Singing Angels, and in 2018 she was recognized as an honoree by the DMV Singers and Musicians Fellowship for her contributions to gospel music. Together, they became familiar and trusted voices in the region, championing artists while pointing listeners to the message of Christ through song.
While Friday’s memorial musical celebrated Jonathan’s life through music and memories, his homegoing service was held Saturday, July 18, at Scripture Cathedral, where family, friends, and the broader gospel community gathered to give thanks for a life marked by service, humility, and unwavering faith.
As the final notes faded and attendees embraced one another, it was clear that Jonathan Shanks Sr.’s legacy extends far beyond radio broadcasts and musical performances. He will be remembered as a husband who deeply loved his wife, a musician respected by his peers, a broadcaster who championed gospel artists, and a servant whose generosity helped shape the DMV quartet gospel community for generations to come.
