8x Grammy Nominated Gospel Great Richard Smallwood Dies at 77

0

Richard Smallwood, an eight-time Grammy® Award-nominated, classically trained composer and gospel recording artist, died on Tuesday, December 30th @ 12:36 AM at the Brooke Grove Rehabilitation and Nursing Center. He died of complications of kidney failure. He was 77. Over the last five decades, he’s written some of the biggest songs of the gospel music genre such as “I Love the Lord” which was remade by Whitney Houston and the Georgia Mass Choir for 1996’s The Preacher’s Wife soundtrack and Boyz II Men’s 1997 album, Evolution, closed with a song “Dear God” that included a refrain of it. “Total Praise” was covered by Destiny’s Child on their 2007 acapella track, “Gospel Medley.” With The Richard Smallwood Singers and later Vision, Smallwood enjoyed his own hits with “I Love the Lord” and “Total Praise” as well as “Center of My Joy,” “Anthem of Praise” and “I’ll Trust You.”

Smallwood was born on November 30, 1948, in Atlanta, GA, but was primarily raised in Washington, D.C. by his mother, Mabel, and his stepfather, Rev. Chester Lee “CL” Smallwood, who was the pastor of Union Temple Baptist Church in southeast Washington, D.C. He began to play piano by ear by the age of five. By seven, he was taking formal lessons, and by eleven, had formed his own gospel group. Roberta Flack was one of his high school teachers prior to launching her recording career with Atlantic Records. He graduated cum laude from Howard University with a degree in music. He developed friendships with fellow classmates such as Donny HathawayDebbie Allen, and Phylicia Rashad. Smallwood was a member of Howard’s first gospel group, the Celestials, who were reputed to be the first gospel group to sing at the Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland. Smallwood was also one of the founding members of Howard University’s Gospel Choir. Following college, Smallwood taught music at the University of Maryland for a while. Eventually, he founded the Richard Smallwood Singers in 1977 – inspired after seeing the Edwin Hawkins Singers perform live. The group brought a progressive, contemporary sound to gospel music. They performed throughout the Washington, D.C. area before they were signed to Onyx Records (The black gospel division of Benson Records) in 1982. Their debut LP, The Richard Smallwood Singers, spent 87 weeks on Billboard magazine’s Spiritual Albums sales chart.

With lead vocals fluctuating between the charismatic Dottie Jones, the smoldering Jackie Ruffin, the earthquaking Darlene Simmons and Smallwood’s dry tenor, they created a distinct sound that caught on with middleclass, mostly black Christian young adults. Whereas most gospel artists of the period appealed to an older crowd, the Smallwood Singers enjoyed a young, educated following. Their 1984 LP, Psalms, hit #1 on Billboard’s Spiritual albums sales chart and earned them a Grammy® award nomination. They moved over to Word Records’ Rejoice black division for the 1987 LP, Textures, which peaked at No. 7 on the same chart and produced the biggest hit of the group’s career with the ballad, “Center of My Joy.” Composed by Smallwood with Bill & Gloria Gaither, the song had a soft pop feel that built to a rousing gospel crescendo with a background vocal arrangement alternating between a classical chorale sound and a passionate gospel blow-out. It was the first song to introduce Smallwood to the white Christian community and has since been covered by artists as diverse as Ron Kenoly, Tanya Goodman-Sykes and the Sensational Nightingales. The group’s popularity led to an invitation to perform in the Soviet Union – reportedly the first gospel group to do a concert tour of the country at the time in the late 1980s.

The group also supplied background vocals for soul/gospel music legend Candi Staton on her 1988 LP, Love Lifted Me, and her 1989 album, Stand Up and Be a Witness. Smallwood shadowed Staton’s vocals on the title cut of the latter project. Smallwood was also among the all-star choir that backed Quincy Jones’ Handel’s Messiah – A Soulful Celebration album in 1992.

By the early 1990s, the Smallwood Singers had left Word Records for a brief tenure with Sparrow Records before finally landing at Jive/Verity Records (now RCA Inspiration).  “I’ve been with every major gospel label that there is,” he once said. “I’ve been able to compare different labels and the way that things are done – the support or lack of. I’ve been in the position of the new kid on the block, where the importance or focus was put on the names that were known better than I was at the time, and all the energy was put on them….the label just did not give me the support, and that’s a frustrating feeling because you have a lot of ideas and concepts that you’d like to see, and you go to the label and say, `hey, I’ve got this idea about marketing or promotion’ and they say `well, we’ll see’ and they just kind of put [the record] out there, and if it makes it, it makes it on its own, without any serious support from the label. I’ve been there.”

With his new label home, Smallwood disbanded the Smallwood Singers. He formed a large backing choir named Vision that he featured on a string of albums that produced gospel radio hits such as “Angels” and “Total Praise.” The lush, near-classical “Total Praise” was introduced in 2001 and has become Smallwood’s biggest and most unexpected hit. “My mother was ill and my god brother was terminally ill with brain cancer,” he told a reporter on the red carpet at the 2014 BMI Trailblazer Awards where he was honored.  “So, I was feeling helpless in terms of what I could do as a caregiver.  And God just sort of gave me that song in the middle of all that which really gave me a peace about the whole thing and let me know that he was still in control of the situation. So, it came to me in a very difficult time of my life, but certainly I had no idea it was going to have the impact that it had.”

Smallwood’s 2007 album, Journey: Live in New York, featured performances from Chaka Khan, The Hawkins Family, Kelly Price and Kim Burrell. Smallwood’s final album, Anthology, was released in 2015 and featured the Gospel radio hit, “Same God.” In 2019, Smallwood published a book, Total Praise: The Autobiography, which detailed Smallwood family secrets as well as his personal battles with grief and depression.

In the last few years, a variety of health issues have prevented Smallwood from recording. In his darkest days, he always referenced music as a solace and a method of ministry. “I don’t know that I have all the answers or any of the answers,” he once said in a 1993 Washington Post interview. “But being a minister of music, I need to be open to listen and give a word of encouragement through songs of testimony. Singing is only part of it. The ministry itself is much more than that.” Aside from 8 Grammy® Award nominations, Smallwood earned three Dove Awards and multiple Stellar Gospel Music Awards.

Smallwood is survived by his brothers, sisters, nieces, nephews, and several godchildren.

Malik Oliver is a Gospel singer with a prophetic voice for this generation.  His rich vocal timbre is deeply rooted in the church and shaped by Gospel legends, but he boldly infuses it with contemporary and innovative styles.  Malik made his solo debut with the single “I Need You,” produced by Dulaneyland Music, and followed up with his album SHIFT in 2023 via MNRK Records.  He has now released his first holiday single, “This Christmas.”

Malik’s rendition of one of the most beloved contemporary holiday songs is an Afro-beats-inspired, good-vibes version of Donny Hathaway’s 1970s soulful classic.  Malik takes you on an uplifting journey of holiday nostalgia and joy wrapped in an uptempo track that inspires a fellowship of groove.

“This Christmas is a song that means a lot to me,” says Malik.  “I chose this song because Christmas has always been a time where love, family, and faith collide in a special way. I wanted to capture that joy and nostalgia, but also remind people what matters most — being present with the ones you love and reflecting on God’s goodness.”

“This Christmas” encourages us to have and remember our very special Christmas moments.  “One of my favorite Christmas memories growing up was waking up to music in the house, good food warming in the kitchen, and my family laughing about nothing at all,” Malik shares.  “We didn’t have everything, but we had each other, and that was enough. That’s the feeling I want this record to give people.”

“This Christmas” is available now on Apple MusicSpotifyAmazon Music, and all digital music outlets.  Add his single to your holiday playlist!  You can also catch Malik performing another holiday favorite, “Have Yourself A Merry Christmas,” on Atlanta Live TV.  Watch his performance here on WATC TV 57 YouTube.

It also propelled his You Belong: Live in Durham (Jaelyn Song / Tyscot / Fair Trade) album to earn a Stellar Gospel Music Award for Contemporary Gospel Album of the Year. “Yahweh” ranked No.  28 on Billboard and No. 35 on Mediabase’s Year-End Gospel Airplay charts.   The uplifting worship track also ranked No.  21 on the Billboard Hot Gospel Songs Year-End hybrid chart that combines digital downloads, streaming and radio airplay.

Gospel Legend John P. Kee is back with ‘Throwback: An Evening with John P. Kee, Part 1’, releasing on Black Friday

0

The prince of gospel music, John P. Kee, is back in a big way. After two years of health challenges – including cancer and a flesh-eating virus – the legendary singer-producer is on the mend, on the road with a staggering concert schedule and in the studio making new music. All these elements inspired the forthcoming album, Throwback: An Evening with John P. Kee, Part 1 (Kee Music Group / Tyscot Records), which releases in digital album and compact disc configurations just in time for holiday gift-giving on Black Friday – November 28, 2025. Listen Link: https://JPKtbpt1.lnk.to/aROPH2

The first radio single from the project “Church Medley” is making joyful noises at gospel radio. The song combines five of Kee’s biggest early hits, such as “I Believe,” “I Won’t Let Go,” “It Will Be Alright,” “He’ll Welcome Me,” and “Thank You Lord (He Did It All).” While Kee leads the song, Zacardi Cortez and Tallie Rogers both sing verses at certain points. The exhilarating track has entered the Top 30 on both the Billboard and Mediabase Gospel Airplay charts.

“For years I ignored the fact that my old catalog touched millions of lives,” says Kee, who has pastored the New Life Fellowship Church in Charlotte, NC, for two decades. “As I continued to write what I considered meaningful new worship music, the fans continued to scream to hear the oldies! So, I finally gave in, realizing that these old songs captivated and inspired generations. For over four decades they became the fabric of many people’s lives. So, I decided to surrender, go in the studio and record these classics for a new generation. I’m honored, excited, and blessed to give this gift to the world, Throwback 2025.”

Fans are happy to see Kee back on the road. He was diagnosed with prostate cancer in January 2024 and a few weeks later was hospitalized with necrotizing fasciitis, a potentially lethal flesh-eating infection. The latter required five surgeries and a lengthy convalescence, during which Kee had to learn to walk again. He’s bounced back from both illnesses and has put all his new energy into making new music. He’s currently working on a few new music projects for himself such as Throwback, and a series of tribute albums to his musical mentor, Bishop Rance Allen.

Throughout the Throwback proceedings, Kee features his church-famous proteges such as the aforementioned artists as well as LeJeune Thompson, Calvin Rodgers Crystal Smith and Ladonna Hairston Mole on various selections. The album concludes with two versions of the new studio cut, “Play Yo Tambourine.” The song is a catchy nod to the 803Fresh “Boots on the Ground” line-dance craze, inviting church folks to leap from the pews and play yo tambourine. Kee also equates the playing of the tambourine to the ringing of the bell after his cancer treatments were completed.

Kee commands the sessions with the combined charisma of a circus ringmaster and a singing psychologist who knows just the words to lift the spirits of his patients. It’s a joyous reminder of Kee’s heyday hits but with just enough sanctified zeal to attract new fans.

John P. Kee has been singing professionally since his teens, when he first played in the R&B band Cameo. As a teenager, he sold drugs and became a born-again Christian after a friend was murdered in a botched drug deal. The self-taught pianist later switched to gospel music, where he helped shape the sound of 1990s urban choir music with hits such as “Jesus is Real,” “Show Up,” “Standing in the Need,” and the RIAA-certified gold album, Not Guilty. Over the course of his career, he’s amassed over 300 million digital streams. In 2025, BMI honored Kee as a Trailblazer of Gospel Music at their annual Trailblazers of Gospel Awards ceremony.

David A. Porter, Sr. Releases New Holiday Anthem and Carol, ‘Finally Christmas’

Songwriter, singer, and pastor of Excel Church in Bowie, MD, Pastor David A. Porter, Sr., is ushering in the season with a new holiday anthem and Christmas carol. Porter began writing songs over 30 years ago, but didn’t start recording and releasing music until 2021. “Finally Christmas” marks his debut original Christmas release, which is followed by a companion track, “The Announcement.”

“Finally, Christmas is a song I wrote more than 15 years ago to welcome the joy and wonder of the holiday season while celebrating the birth of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ,” Porter explains. “After all these years, I’m thrilled to share this long-awaited Christmas anthem with the world finally.”

“Finally Christmas” is an infectious anthem and holiday music standard in the making. The background vocalists beautifully lift the melody, while the musicians infuse the track with an undeniable sense of jubilee and festive power. Porter ingeniously interwove reflections of some of the best-loved holiday classics into “Finally Christmas,” including “Go Tell It On The Mountain,” God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen,” and “Angels We Have Heard On High.”

“The Announcement,” written and produced by Porter, is a companion track that is a festive, classically constructed carol. Porter and his singers tell the story of the birth of Christ majestically, accompanied by a rich tapestry of strings, horns, bells, and cymbals, creating the fullness of a live orchestra. “The Announcement is a triumphal Christmas declaration that joyfully proclaims the miraculous birth of Jesus Christ,” says Porter. “My background choir delivers a stunning performance, especially in the Hallelujah chorus, leaving listeners inspired and rejoicing.”

Gospel’s coolest crooner, Jason Nelson, has dropped a hot new holiday track entitled “Shepherd’s Song” (Jaelyn Song /Tyscot / FairTrade). The bouncy, feel-good track is a warm and light-hearted retelling of the birth of Jesus Christ. Nelson’s smooth vocal tone coats the song like glaze on Christmas cookies. He co-wrote the track with his longtime collaborators Danni & Jerome Baylor, with whom he wrote his 2021 No. 1 radio smash “Residue.” This time, they added noted Maryland horn arranger Larry Mack to the writing team. This track is a preview of Nelson’s first Christmas album, which he’s planning for a fall 2026 release.

Fred Hammond Presents Sensere Takes The Soul of Future Worship To New Heights

0

Sensere is more than a band; it is a movement that combines elements of R&B, funk, and soul into a one-of-a-kind Gospel music experience. While the band has been together for over two decades, 2025 proved to be its breakout year with numerous milestones reached – and more on the horizon.

2025 will go down in history as the year Sensere achieved its first #1 Mediabase single with “That’s God…LaLaLa.” The song also peaked at #2 on the Billboard Gospel Radio chart. “That’s God…LaLaLa” is the first single from the band’s fourth album, Fred Hammond Presents: Sensere The Soul of Future Worship Vol. 2, released on Tribl Records/Wright Sound Music & Entertainment and produced by Sensere founder, Grammy award-nominated musician and producer James “Jdubb” Wright.

“We’ve been at this for decades, and it feels like this year God showed me what faith can produce,” says Wright. “We have stayed true to ourselves and the vision God gave us for Sensere. We are grateful that we are starting to reap the fruits of our labor.”

Fred Hammond Presents: Sensere The Soul of Future Worship Vol. 2 is a work of genius that features powerhouse vocalists Mali Music, Keyondra Lockett, B. Slade, Darlene McCoy, and Fred Hammond in addition to Sensere, which is a triple threat band that not only plays – but sings (and as those who have seen them live know) and dances. Fred Hammond says that he wanted to present this album boldly because it is his way of saying to the world, “Pay attention – this is where Gospel is headed.”

The world is paying attention. The success of “That’s God…LaLaLa” has created an array of opportunities for Sensere to broaden its base with national interviews, such as GetUp! Mornings with Erica Campbell and performance platforms such as Radio One’s Praise in the Park Atlanta, where they were the house band backing award-winning artists James Fortune, Dottie Peoples, and William Murphy, in addition to performing songs from their latest album.

The momentum continues to build as Sensere prepares to release the Christmas single “Joy & Peace” ft. Adolphus on November 28.

MARTIN SMITH, JOSH BALDWIN “I COULD SING OF YOUR LOVE FOREVER”

0

Artist, songwriter, producer and modern worship pioneer Martin Smith is joined by Gold-certified singer, songwriter and worship leader Josh Baldwin on the new expression of “I Could Sing Of Your Love Forever.” Available now at streaming and digital outlets worldwide from The Fuel Music via https://slinky.to/ICouldSingOfYourLoveForever, the song is the third single from the full-length, Billboard-featured House of Worship album, slated for release in January 2026.

Helping to define an entire era of modern worship in the ’90s, “I Could Sing Of Your Love Forever” continues to bridge generations today. The reimagined worship anthem continues to champion the message of God’s endless love for people while introducing a new sound accessible to listeners worldwide.

The story of the song began in the small village of Littlehampton on the south coast of England, where Smith led worship for a monthly youth event called Cutting Edge. Not knowing anything about the burgeoning Christian music industry in America, his focus was on the 1,000 kids who showed up every month. “That was our world,” he remembers. “And every month it was like, ‘Okay, God, what are you going to say? What do you want us to sing next month? I need another song to put on the lips of these kids that are coming.’ And they weren’t just church kids; it was open for everybody.”

It was out of this movement that drew as many as 10,000 young people for special events that “I Could Sing Of Your Love Forever” was birthed. “I remember getting this plastic swimming pool and kids were coming down front, getting baptized in the moment,” shares Smith. “We’re worshipping and like, right, you’ve just got saved, in you go. … amazing memories.”

“I started playing guitar in high school, and there were all these songs that were just very piano-driven,” says Baldwin. “And I remember, specifically, ‘I Could Sing Of Your Love Forever’ opened the door for me. It was the first time I’d heard spontaneous worship recorded … and I was like, ‘we can do that?’ It just gave me permission to worship that way.”

“I think now we’re in an interesting moment in history in the church where that permission needs to be given again,” responds Smith. “I don’t think God’s ever said once, ‘This is the sound that I like.’ And yet, we’ve tricked ourselves into thinking we’ve found what He really likes. But I don’t think you find that in scripture. It’s like, ‘Make a holy noise.’ So I think there’ll be some new things that come along. And I think we’ll be glad for that.”

The ‘holy noise’ of “I Want To Sing Of Your Love Forever” follows the House of Worship lead single and video, “Shout To The Lord – Live,” a duet of this global worship anthem by original writer and Dove Award-winning, RIAA Gold®-selling Australian worship pioneer Darlene Zschech and 17-time GRAMMY® Award-winning gospel icon CeCe Winans. The second single and video from the project, released last month, “Here I Am To Worship – Live,” the No. 1 most popular song sung in churches for two consecutive years (2003 and 2004), features the song’s Dove Award-winning writer, Tim Hughes, and four-time GRAMMY®-nominated Cody Carnes.

Following the release of the album, a one-of-a-kind House of Worship event is set to stream Feb. 1, 2026, in partnership with The Fuel Music and in:ciite® Events. Churches, small groups, and more are invited to register at https://houseofworshipmusic.com/events/ for this World Vision-sponsored event, promising an unforgettable night of worship with believers from around the globe.

Artists featured on the recording and stream include Brenton Brown, Brian and Jenn Johnson, Brian Doerksen, CeCe Winans, Charity Gayle, Chris Brown (Elevation Worship), Chris McClarney, Christy Nockels, Cody Carnes, Darlene Zschech, Ed Cash (We The Kingdom), Hillary Scott (Lady A), Israel Houghton, Josh Baldwin, Kari Jobe, Leeland Mooring, Martin Smith, Matt Redman, Michael W. Smith, Mitch Wong, Naomi Raine, Pat Barrett, Paul Baloche and Tim Hughes.

Produced by Paul Mabury and John Hartley, House of Worship features four-time GRAMMY and 45-time Dove Awards-winner Michael W.
