Do you know how God controls the storm and causes the lightning to flash from his clouds?
Do you understand how he moves the clouds with wonderful perfection and skill?
When you are sweltering in your clothes and the south wind dies down and everything is still, he makes the skies reflect the heat like a bronze mirror. Can you do that?
“So teach the rest of us what to say to God.
We are too ignorant to make our own arguments.
Should God be notified that I want to speak?
Can people even speak when they are confused?
We cannot look at the sun, for it shines brightly in the sky…
So also, golden splendor comes from the mountain of God.
He is clothed in dazzling splendor.
We cannot imagine the power of the Almighty; but even though he is just and righteous, he does not destroy us.
No wonder people everywhere fear him.
All who are wise show him reverence.” Job 37:15-24
It is frightening to me that some people have no fear of God whatsoever.
I once saw a commercial in which someone rejected God and boldly said he was not afraid to burn in hell. I find it stunning that humans would look at the marvel of creation and deny that there is a Creator behind creation. We have no problem believing that planes and ships and trains were created by humans, but humans, animals, mountains, rivers, galaxies, the sun, moon, and stars appeared on their own without an intelligent designer behind it!
Elihu was reminding Job of the marvels of creation and reminding us that we have a reason to fear God. He reminds us that God is clothed in dazzling splendor and that his power is unimaginable!
He also gets our attention by reminding us that, “even though God is just and righteous, he does not destroy us.” He comes to an arresting conclusion: “No wonder people everywhere fear him. All who are wise show him reverence.”
So, do you truly fear God? If so, then show him reverence by the way you relate to him and conduct your life. Your way of life is infallible proof that you truly fear and reverence God.
We have a reason to fear God.
Prayer: God, you dwell in unapproachable light, and yet you have reached out to me with love and compassion. In spite of my sins, you do not destroy me. You continue to love me. Please help me to live in fear and reverence of you. Amen.
