Look, God is greater than we can understand.
His years cannot be counted.
He draws up the water vapor and then distills it into rain…
Who can understand the spreading of the clouds and the thunder that rolls from heaven?…
The thunder announces his presence; the storm announces his indignant anger.
My heart pounds as I think of this.
It trembles within me.
Listen carefully to the thunder of God’s voice as it rolls from His mouth…
the tremendous voice of his majesty. He does not restrain it when he speaks.
God’s voice is glorious in the thunder.
We can’t even imagine the greatness of his power…
Pay attention to this, Job.
Stop and consider the wonderful miracles of God!-Job 36:26-37:14
The greatness of God is simply beyond human comprehension! The Psalmist rightly declares: “The heavens declare the glory of God…” (Psalm 19:1). The prophet Isaiah also testifies: “With whom, then, will you compare God?… He sits enthroned above the circle of the earth, and its people are like grasshoppers. He stretches out the heavens like a canopy, and spreads them out like a tent to live in. He brings princes to naught and reduces the rulers of this world to nothing. . . Lift up your eyes and look to the heavens: Who created all these? He who brings the starry host one by one and calls forth each of them by name. Because of his great power and mighty strength, not one of them is missing.” (Isaiah 40:18-26, NIV).
Job’s friend, Elihu, reminds Job of how great and incomprehensible God is! His words are quite arresting: “My heart pounds as I think of this. It trembles within me. . . We can’t even imagine the greatness of his power.”
Elihu is absolutely right! Our hearts should pound and tremble within our chests when we think about the greatness of God! But, beyond that, our hearts should also pound and tremble with gratitude that the great, vast, and incomprehensible God is also our father and He cares very deeply about us. Elihu enjoins Job to: “Pay attention to this…”
Would you pause and pay attention to the greatness of God? Would you pause and thank Him for His love for you?
Prayer: Father, I declare my love and gratitude to you. Amen.
