Review: Marcus Akins ‘Like A Child’ CD release concert

Marcus Akins crafts a convincing album that creates a powerful experience.

Marcus Akins burst onto the scene with his debut EP, The Pursuit of Hope,” which hit the iTunes top 20 without any advance buzz. Now, Akins is back with his first full length album, Like A Child.  Fans of the passionate worship leader won’t be disappointed and new fans will get immersed in a style of worship that is both driven and authentic. “Like A Child” debuted at #10 on the Christian iTunes chart and got as high as #7 on the release day

On Saturday, May 23, Marcus Akins held his CD release concert at DC Metro Church in Fairfax, Virginia.
The concert kicked off with high energy as New Jersey artist, Kezia set the atmosphere with several highly charged worship songs.

Akins took the stage and with each song, the audience was taken into a higher level of praise. The background vocals were tight, and the band  more than ably to use their instruments as conduits of praise. It’s  worth noting that Carolina Akins (Marcus’ wife) and Stephen Darby are musical forces to be reckoned and definitely ones to watch.

The set included many compelling songs, including “Made New,” written by Akins in 2013, and the hauntingly beautiful “Every Part of Me,” featuring Stephen Darby.  There were unrestricted eruptions of worship throughout the night, perhaps bringing to fuition the singer’s motivation for the album: “Our hope is that when you hear these songs, you will experience God’s presence, which will take you to a place of child-like fearlessness.”

Like A Child is worth the investment and Akins seems to be on a musical trajectory that will continue to soar as his focus remains fixed on one thing. “God is the thing that I’m after,” Akins said during the concert.  By the perpetual worship that took place that night, it seems he’s hitting that mark.
