Guvna B: UK Singer Makes Big Splash Across The Pond

Guvna B in jacketGuvna B made his presence known on the UK gospel music scene in 2009. His debut album, The Narrow Road catapulted him to the head of the class in the gospel music industry. As we celebrate Black Music Month, it is only fitting we salute this brother-in-Christ from across the pond.

A true sign of his musical significance can be found in the fact that Guvna B he has become the first urban gospel artist to top the official UK Christian and Gospel Music charts with his new album Odd 1 Out.

Odd 1 Out is an album that seeks to encourage young people to not follow the crowd, but stand out in order to carry out God’s purpose for their lives. It contains thought provoking songs and collaborations with some leading artists including Canton Jones. Other artists include Keisha Buchanan,  formerly of the top selling pop group The Sugar Babes, and Jorim Kelly, a fellow artist who also attends Hillsong Church in central London with Guvna B.

At first glance it would appear that the name Guvna B is a play on  the old British greeting.  Not so. The name is actually an acronym for God’s Unique Vessel Now Assigned.

The London-born son of parents from Accra , Ghana, Guvna B did not have life easy growing up. In fact as reported in an article on The Voice Online, Guvna B said “I grew up on a council estate in East London. The odds were stacked against me but I’m a graduate and I have a number one album. With God anything is possible.”

Guvna B is also well rounded as he earned his bachelor’s degree in Business Management from the University of Hertfordshire. This should certainly prove to be an asset as he navigates the waters of the gospel music industry.

Deeply entrenched in his community, Guvna B is an ambassador for Youth For Christ, Compassion UK and a celebrity ambassador for the Princes Trust. In 2010, Guvna B won Best Gospel Act at the MOBO Awards.
