GMWA Events: Some of the musical happenings in DC during the convention

The DC Chapter of GMWA is a proud host of the convention

DC will abuzz with lots of activities and events as the Gospel Music Worskhop of America (GMWA) touches down for a week. Each year, up to 20,000 delegates assemble in the host. city for a teaching, learning and performance orientated environment. These delegates come with an interest in all styles of Gospel Music and the GMWA’s divisions and auxiliaries offer the services that meet their needs. An additional 3,000 to 5,000 local gospel music lovers attend the workshop and musical services during the week.

In March of 1967, Rev. James Cleveland (1931-1991) called together musicians from across the United States in an effort to brainstorm his idea of producing a venue for gospel music presentations. The convention has continued to grow over the past 50 years and has been an incubator for many of today’s singers and songwriters.

There will be lots to choose from and for those in the DMV the Kenny Taylor late nite musical will be  among the must-attend GMWA events. The musical honors the late Kenny Taylor who died May 27,2017. Taylor was one of gospel’s top promoters and was known for putting powerful late night musicals featuring top artists as well as emerging artists.

Here’s a look at some of the GMWA events.
