Album Review: Bobby Jones 'Rejoice With Me'

Bobby Jones  is back with his first CD in seven years, Rejoice with Me.  The album is filled with a diverse array of collaborations. Faith Evans, Howard Hewett, Ann Nesby, Tommye Young West, Renee Spearman and Shawn McLemore all check in to give the gospel icon and host of the Bobby Jones Gospel Show a musical hand.

The project not only features these guests but is a star vehicle for the Nashville Super Choir (NSC).  The choir kicks into high gear on the album and the vocals of some of its members are showcased on songs like  “Created For Worship” which is a song that gently and melodically reminds us of our purpose here on earth. “Faithful Is He” is gives several members of NSC a chance to shine as they take turns as lead.

Faith Evans lights up the infectious title track “Rejoice With Me.” Tommye Young West sets souls afire with “Right Now Praise.” West whips the song into a feverish frenzy with her impassioned, solid vocals. Howard Hewitt reminds us why we love to her him sing gospel as his smooth vocals captivate on “Searched All Over.”

For ballad lovers Ann Nesby fits the bill on the beautiful, “Praise the Lord”. The hand-clapping church experience is magnified by Shawn McLemore on “Let’s Praise the Lord” that invokes a thunderous, pulsating call and response with NSC. Renee Spearman brings the album to a close with the urban-flavored, “Nothing Without You.”

Bobby Jones and NSC used the seven-year hiatus wisely. They are back with a sound that lives up to their decades long reputation of excellence.
