Rick Warren Discusses Grief In First Sermon Since Son's Suicide

Rick Warren returns to pulpit with wife Kay by his side

Rick Warren returns to pulpitSaturday marked a return to the pulpit for Pastor Rick Warren. The author of the best-selling book, The Purpose Driven Life, and his wife, Kay, spoke about their grief after the loss of their son, Matthew, and their unfailing hope in God during the Saddleback Church founders’ first time back at the pulpit since their son’s suicide nearly four months ago.

The sermon came at  the first of five weekend services Saturday. The couple attribute their son’s lifelong battle with mental illness as the cause for his death and have vowed to remove the stigma that is associated with the disease.

“In the middle of all that intense pain, Kay and I have felt the favor of God because of your prayers and we intend to spend the rest of our lives comforting others with the comfort we ourselves have been given by God,” said Warren, after reading 2 Corinthians 1:3-11 to open his sermon, “How to Get Through What You’re Going Through.”
