Review: BMI Trailblazers of Gospel Music Live 2013

BMI Trailblazers of Gospel Music Live 2013 gives gospel music lovers a glimpse inside the annual invitation-only tribute celebration held this past January during Stellar Awards Weekend. One listen to the 10-track album will make listeners appreciate the performance rights management company’s first entry into the recording world in partnership with eOne Music.

The live recording paid tribute to honorees Edwin Hawkins, Lady Tramaine Hawkins and Kurt Carr. The Joe “Flip” Wilson/Donald Lawrence-produced CD features performances by some of the best in gospel music, including Yolanda Adams, CeCe Winans, Kierra Sheard, Pastor Shirley Caesar and more.

BMI Trailblazers of Gospel Music Live 2013 captures the essence of the live experience. The set begins with a rousing rendition of Kurt Carr’s “In the Sanctuary” by  Donald Lawrence and Company. Yolanda Adams and CeCe Winans complement one another on the robust “He Brought Me Out.” Yolanda takes the lead with CeCe coming in at the end as the two powerhouse vocalists converge to a fulfilling crescendo.

Emerging star and recent Light Records signee Anaysha Figuero does a star turn on “Holy One” in tribute to Lady Tramaine Hawkins. Figuero clearly owns the song with her delivery and you can hear the essence of a young Tramaine coming through her vocals. This song may prove to be the one that opens the door to great things for Figuero.

Lisa Knowles  captivates with her rendition of “Oh My Soul Loves Jesus.” Knowles cuts loose on this song and draws the audience in. There’s nothing like a good old hand-clapping church song. Pastor Shirley Ceasar and Bishop Paul Morton take listeners on a jubilant trip down memory lane with Edwin Hawkin’s “O Happy Day.”

The album concludes with the compelling “This Day” by Kierra Sheard. The power behind the words to the song are evoked by Sheard as this next generation of the Clark Dynasty proves she can hold her own with the best of them.

Other remarkable performances include  Sheri Jones-Moffet on  Kurt Carr’s“I Almost Let Go,” Jason Nelson and Jonathan Nelson on “I Need Your Spirit (Fall Fresh On Me)”Amber Bullock’s rendition of Carr’s “For Every Mountain” and LeAndria Johnson performing Tramaine Hawkin’s “Changed.”

If  you love live recordings BMI Trailblazers of Gospel Music Live 2013 is a must-have. It is a powerful experience that’s the next best thing to bring there.

BMI Trailblazers of Gospel Music Live 2013 is available October 22.
