Septuagenarian Mavis Staples Still Going Strong; Debuts #2 On Gospel Chart

Mavis Staples scores win on chartsMavis Staples has been around for a long time. The Grammy Award winner has been in the music industry for more than fifty years. Last week, the 73 year old  (she adds another year on July 10) released her second gospel album,  One True Vine, which shot straight to #2 on the Billboard Gospel chart and reached #67 on Billboard 200.

The R&B and gospel singer, actress and civil rights activist first came to prominence as a member of the Staples Singers.

Since that time she has established a reputation as a solo artist. In  2011, Mavis Staples won her first Grammy award for You Are Not Alone.

Mavis Staples new albumOne True Vine is a ten-track collection of  gospel songs styled in Staples’ unique way. Songs like the traditional “What Are They Doing in Heaven Today” are reminiscent of old-time church.

She also revisits ”I Like The Things About Me,” the civil rights album penned by Pop Staples.
