Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee Mavis Staples, legendary gospel organist Pastor Maceo Woods and iconic preacher Apostle Richard D. Henton will receive lifetime achievement recognition during the 2015 Chicago Gospel Music Awards to be held on Friday, June 19th at Chicago’s Christ Universal Temple.
The Staple Singers left an indelible imprint on the American consciousness and is recognized as one of the early progenitors of message music. With Roebuck Staples on guitar and Mavis Staples on lead, the Staple Singers contributed timeless classics including “Uncloudy Day,” “Help Me Jesus,” “Tell Heaven I’m Coming” and the ever popular “I’ll Take You There.”
Reverend Maceo Woods, founder of the famed Christian Tabernacle Church Baptist has a long standing reputation as an adept musician and choirmaster. His Vee Jay recording of Amazing Grace instantly became an industry standard and advanced him to Gospel superstar status with appearances at Madison Square Garden and the Apollo Theater.
A celebrated General in the army of the Lord, Apostle Richard D. Henton, founding pastor of the 5,000 member Monument of Faith Evangelistic Center is recognized the world over for his pentecostal style of preaching and evangelizing that spans well over 60 years. His Breakthrough Hour radio and television broadcasts reaches men and women across the world.
BET host Dr. Bobby Jones, Grammy Award winner BeBe Winans and Stellar Award winner Maurette Brown Clark will serve as presenters while performances will come from the Chicago Mass Choir, the Thompson Community Singers Reunion Choir, Paul Porter, Bishop Larry Trotter and Sweet Holy Spirit Combined Choirs and the 2015 Stellar Award winner for song of the year, Ms. Tiff Joy.
