Cece Winans and Yolanda Adams joined him to sing the song written by Bishop I.V. Hilliard.
Host Kirk Franklin was joined by judges Donnie, CeCe and Yolanda. This season’s theme is “United By Faith.” As the contestants gave it their all, the judges encouraged them, but also gave them candid feedback on their performances.
Here’s a sample of what they said to a few contestants:
Tyler Little was the second contestant and he made the bold move of taking on Earnest Pugh‘s “I Need Your Glory.” The nineteen year-old pulled it off. “Confidence oozes out of you.” said CeCe. Donnie told him it was, “effortless, it seems common to you.”
Tamika McClellan used to sing in the subway. She chose Thomas Whitfield‘s “I’m Encouraged.” Yolanda told her “great selection, just stay on top of your notes.” However, Cece somewhat concurred and said that it was “powerful, a little pitchy, lots of wrong notes.”
David Michael sang “Praise Is What I Do.” which impressed the judges. “It was great, your level of range is wonderful.” said Donnie, while Yolanda said “Great voice, no complaints.”
Linda Bell brought some old school church with Clay Evans‘ “I’ve Got A Testimony.” She reeled the audience in with her performance. However, Donnie said “you were fun to watch, but your vocals were not there. You screamed a lot of the notes out.” Yolanda said. “you made Houston proud'” to her fellow Texan.
Paula Champion chose Helen Baylor‘s “Can You Reach My Friend.” Yolanda said, “I liked the texture of your voice.” CeCe told her, “your gift is amazing. Make sure you stay strong from beginning to end.”
The other contestants who performed tonight were Alexis Hollins, Quan Howell, Kristin Yakiima Shepard.
Among the standouts so far, based on comments on social media, seem to be Tyler Little, Paula Champion, Quan Howell and David Michael. In fact, Earnest Pugh was so impressed with Little he sent him this tweet:
@tylerlittle_sb6 great job!!! Keep going
